OverviewThis book is dedicated to all of the friendships that I've been fortunate to share in my association with my fire service family. I cherish all of my fellow crew members as well as the students that have become life-long friends. I developed this resource to assist the prospective entry-level firefighter candidate. Throughout my years of teaching in the fire service and in the Fire Technology program at Mission College, I've been routinely asked the same questions about how to survive the testing process. It became apparent that I needed to establish one place that I could direct them to so they would have an answer to their inquiries along with a permanent study resource. This work is a culmination of my previous works that direct the candidate in how to progress from the decision to enter the testing process all the way through their probationary period after they've received their badge. It stresses that preparation is the all-important part of the process that helps ensure a positive outcome for your efforts. I go in depth to set the candidate on a path that prepares them to look solid on their application, on their resume and in their oral exams. You can't just flip a switch when it's test time. You have to act now like you're already a professional firefighter. You're applying for a job that demands honesty, integrity and the ability to interact in a positive and productive way with fellow crew members as well as the public we serve. I provide examples of various oral board questions on multiple topics along with the necessary philosophy needed to develop a reasonable and professional response during the oral board exam. I stress how preparation in developing practiced responses can alleviate much of the unknown when a question is posed to the candidate. The physical portion of the exam process can be devastating to the candidate that isn't prepared. All of the standard exam events are broken down so they're easy to master. It is my hope that this resource provides a foundation for hundreds more students as they start down that long path to a badge.
