Overview

Originally built by the Edinburgh Musical Society in 1762, St Cecilia's Hall is Scotland's oldest purpose-built concert hall and also home to one of the most important historic musical instrument collections anywhere in the world. Comprising over 400 instruments from across the globe, the collection is housed in the newly refurbished Music Museum. Many of the instruments are still playable and through an established concert programme, St Cecilia's Hall is the only place in the world where it is still possible to hear eighteenth-century music performed on eighteenth-century instruments in an elegant eighteenth-century concert hall. This illuminating little book showcases the highlights from the collection, pairing beautiful photography with accessible and informative text that will enable a wider audience than ever to engage with these fascinating instruments and their stories. AUTHOR: Sarah Deters has a PhD in organology and is a Curator at Musical Instrument Museums Edinburgh. SELLING POINTS: . A beautifully illustrated selection of historical musical instruments from the collection of St Cecilia's Hall, Edinburgh . The Music Museum is the University of Edinburgh's first visitor attraction and the concert hall is a popular music venue in its own right, having been in continuous use since 1762 . Engaging and accessible text captures the imagination regardless of prior historical / musical knowledge 60 colour images
