OverviewSports commentary and its effect on viewers are multifaceted and have already been researched in some areas. Research into sports commentary actually began with the fastest team sport in the world-ice hockey. It was discovered that the way games were perceived in North America was influenced by the style of commentary. This study deals with this topic and compares sports commentary from Canada and Germany, both countries with a strong ice hockey culture, during the 2016 IIHF World Championship. The focus is on German and Canadian commentary, which is compared on various levels. What are the distinctive features of the respective commentary? Can we also speak of 1-1 reporting in ice hockey? How do Canadian and German commentators differ in terms of speaking time, tactical analysis of the game, and simple retelling of the action? Readers will find the answers to these questions in this work.
