Overview

Nursing care has been restructured throughout its history. Since the 1980s, the revaluation of social, political, ethical and aesthetic practices in society has been visibly noted by the growing number of national and international literature presented. This science and art have relied on the construction of new scientific knowledge (schools of scientific and philosophical thought) to improve its practice. Nursing needs science in its practice to support the techniques used in care. In addition, it must have a spirit of research, sensitivity, and intuition so that nursing care can be characterised as an art (NASCIMENTO et al., 2003). Thus, we can also infer that nursing care is organised and permeated by the subjectivity (spirit, essence) of those who promote the act of caring. It takes on a technical, organised and systematic dimension, but is permeated by subjectivity, ceasing to be merely a practical, cold and rational action. In this way, human beings are born with the potential to care and equally need to be cared for.
