Reviews

Lewis Schipper provides an extraordinarily comprehensive and intelligent discussion of Spinoza's philosophy. It speaks to crucial questions of our time in an elegant style for a general intellectual audience. No other book on Spinoza is at once so lively, amusing, and thoughtful - an invaluable aid to students. (Wilhelm S. Wurzer, Duquesne University) Much has been written on Spinoza's philosophy. But in my view, Professor Lewis Schipper's book 'Spinoza's Ethics: The View From Within' makes a very valuable and noteworthy contribution to that large literature. A mere glance at the titles of his 11 rich chapters reveals the range, depth and sophistication of his multi-faceted treatment, which spans all of the essential topics in Spinoza's thought, rather than merely his ethics. I learned much from this book and recommend it warmly to others. (Adolf Gruenbaum, University of Pittsburgh)
