Overview

The spinal cord is a thin, long and tubular structure made up of nervous tissue. It extends from the medulla oblongata in the brainstem to the lumbar region of the vertebral column. Impairment to the spinal cord results in temporary or permanent changes in its functioning. There are several symptoms of spinal cord injury (SCI), such as loss of muscle function, loss of sensation and difficulty in breathing.
