Spiked: Church, State Intrigue and the Rose Tattoo

Overview

In 1957 Dublin's Pike Theatre--famous for discovering Behan and premiering Waiting for Godot--staged Tennessee Williams's celebrated play. The Rose Tattoo, to packed audiences. Shortly after it opened, the theatre director was arrested on the grounds of indecency, and the theatre was later forced to close entirely. Few episodes in modern Irish history have proved quite as mysterious as this one.
