OverviewSpiders in the Dark is the turning-point volume of the saga - the first book in which the shadows beneath Ganor finally move into the open. Violence spreads across the northern Haems. Strange disappearances trouble the woodland sanctums. Wolves howl in patterns no ranger can explain. Travelers whisper of monstrous half-spider creatures stalking the river gorges at night. Beneath it all, the Astyrian Empire begins probing deeper into Ganor's frontier, quietly mapping its settlements and raiding small villages to test their strength. Fenris of Wolfdale - a young druid, hunter, and bowman - sets out with Vulcan, Uthor the Nubian Wulver, and the old druid Rundathal to investigate the ""spider haunt"" of the northern hills. What begins as a simple rescue mission becomes the discovery of an ancient web of tunnels stretching under the forests, home to half-forgotten horrors and the first hints of an age-old corruption tied to the Daevas and the Order of the Basilisk. The companions free captives, destroy the brood-chambers, and rescue several Hauflins from certain death - but the cost is great. This victory, rather than ending the threat, awakens the Astyrians to Ganor's vulnerability. Their colony at Lake Mythrond expands, raiding deeper and burning entire villages to feed their war machine. Forts rise. Ships are built. The tower of Azor-dib becomes a place of dread. Meanwhile, in distant Ravenlann, King Joseph receives a mysterious letter from a monk - a plea for help from the west, warning that war is coming and the Astyrian advance cannot be ignored. Back in Ganor, winter descends hard and early. Fenris, Vulcan, Rundathal, and their small band take shelter in the high villages, growing in skill, trust, and unity. Their deeds reach far places, drawing the attention of kings, druids, and spies. When the snows thaw, the first true refugees begin to arrive - families driven from their homes by Astyrian raids, or by the monstrous ""spiders in the dark"" that still wander the old caverns. Among them is a young woman whose story will shape Fenris's destiny. The book ends on the brink of collapse - the Astyrians take the town of Norshanx, build the iron tower on Lake Mythrond, and prepare to seize the whole of North Dornia. The companions, now blooded and united, gather at Wolfdale's Yule festival to decide their path. War is at hand. And far to the south, Respendial - still a prisoner in Azor-dib - senses that destiny is turning.
