Borne out of the Drawing Building online archive, ""Speculative Structures"" presents a stunning visual study of unbuilt (impossible or speculative) structures that exist only on paper. Soliciting architects, designers, and artists of renown, as well as emerging talents, from all over the world, Maxamilian Godlfarb and Matt Bua have edited a collection that reveals an array of works that convey alternatives, byproducts, expansions, or critiques of our inhabited environments. From abstract and conceptual visual interpretations of structures to more traditional architectural renderings, the featured work is divided into thematic chapters, ranging from Adapt/Reuse to Clandestine, Mobile, Radical Lifestyle, Techno-Sustainable, and Worship. Along with arresting and inspiring illustrated content, every chapter also features an essay exploring its respective themes. Highlighting visions that exist outside of established channels of production, and conventions of design, ""Speculative Structures"" showcases a multiplicity in concept and vision, fantasy and innovation.

Author Information
Maximilian Goldfarb is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice extends into many media. His ongoing project, M49 is a mobile research and production facility for site-related projects. Goldfarb is affiliated with free103point9, a Transmission Arts organization, and WGXC, a community media project, where he is a founding council member. He is a collaborator of The Incident Report Viewing Station in Hudson, NY. His recent site-derived, multimedia project, Deep Cycle received support from the Harpo Foundation and The Elizabeth Firestone Graham Foundation. He has also received grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and the Experimental Television Center, and was a recent fellow at the Macdowell Colony. Matt Bua makes small scale improvised buildings, hand-built people's museums and roadside attractions. His recent work takes form in fantastical spaces that redefine and reimagine found objects and sustainable resources as functional elements in architecture. Bua's present project is the collaborative construction of small scale examples of vernacular, experimental, and visionary architecture on a piece of land in Catskill, NY. Bua has shown work internationally at exhibitions and public spaces including Mass MoCA, PS1/MoMA, Brooklyn Museum, Derek Eller Gallery, and on Roosevelt and Governor's Island.""
