Speaking of God: An Essential Guide to Christian Thought

Overview

Do you ever think you're forgetting how to talk about God? Or never learned how? Theology is nothing more--and nothing less--than speaking together about God. Still, a lot of us don't know where to start. In Speaking of God, pastor and theologian Anthony Siegrist helps readers recover a basic language around Christian theology. The sweeping epic of Scripture serves as the scaffold for this accessible book. In vivid and even humorous writing, Siegrist introduces us to scholars and pilgrims and traditions that disclose essential truths about God and Jesus Christ, as well as concepts like creation, sin, redemption, the church, and discipleship. By plumbing the works of theologians such as Augustine, Julian of Norwich, Antonia Gonzalez, and Kazoh Kitamori, Siegrist offers readers an introduction to Christian theology throughout the ages, emphasizing common threads of thought and practice across traditions. Learning to talk about God requires courage and humility; this handbook of Christian theology will help you gain both. Join the deepest, longest conversation in the world.

Reviews

This is an excellent book for anyone interested in helping Christians think Christianly about their own Christianity. Siegrist writes with clarity and ease. His thinking is biblically informed, historically grounded, and personally tested. His theology is generous, winsome, and deep. In my work as a teacher and travelling theologian I am often asked to recommend books to people new to theological thinking. Siegrist's work has shot to the top of my list. --Stephen Backhouse, dean of theology for the local church at Westminster Theological Centre, director of Tent Theology, and author of The Zondervan Essential Companion to Christian History and Kierkegaard: A Single Life I loved reading this little introductory handbook on Christian theology. Siegrist makes theology come alive. It's a wonderful mix of autobiography, biblical survey, and theological history. When you finish it, your mind will be dancing with new words and ideas about faith and God. And you'll have a long list of authors you will want to explore! --Carol Penner, assistant professor of theological studies at Conrad Grebel University College This wise, winsome book honors the honest seeking that many bring to the study of scripture and the life of faith. With light touches of humor and a firm grasp of the art of interpretation, Speaking of God reveals the strangeness and beauty of the Bible, and reflects expansively on the task of theology in our time. Accessible and engaging, Siegrist speaks of God in ways that invite readers from all walks of life into life-giving conversation. --Debra Dean Murphy, associate professor of religious studies at West Virginia Wesleyan College and author of Happiness, Health, and Beauty: The Christian Life in Everyday Terms In lively chapters shaped by scripture's central stories, Anthony Siegrist invites readers to join the old but always new conversation that is Christian theology. Those who bring their big questions to Speaking of God will find here a stimulating guide to thinking about Christian faith, and wonderful resources for discussing it with others. --Dorothy Bass, author of Receiving the Day: Christian Practices for Opening the Gift of Time and director of the Valparaiso Project on the Education and Formation of People in Faith
