OverviewSouthern Religion and the Black Intellect, calls for African-Americans to reflect for a moment on black religion and the influence it has had on the intellectual development of southern black society over generations. Many blacks in the south have conditioned their thinking with religious otherworldly notions as the basis for comprehending life circumstances. This kind of religious mindset has impaired the rational thought processes in too many southern blacks. Today, African-Americans living in the Black Belt region find themselves confronting counterproductive social trends as a daily normality. Black Belt communities face depressed economic conditions, out of control generational poverty, an undereducated adult population, self-serving political leaders, under-performing public schools, and an overabundance of black churches serving no recognizable societal purpose. In those southern black communities where religion is the community's primary social structure, there exists an intellectual weakness in many southern blacks' thinking. Southern black religion has conditioned many blacks to think less and use emotions instead of intelligence as the inquisitor to reason out questions of life. Religion calls for thinking the improbable, even the impossible, as rational.
