OverviewThe book explains sound insulation in buildings at a level suitable for both graduate students and expert consultants. Theoretical models are set out for sound transmission in buildings, with an emphasis on thick and heavy constructions. Thus, the description is not restrained by the common assumption of bending waves which is characteristic of thin plates, only. A general description is provided, with the modal density in the structures as a key parameter. At low frequencies statistical energy analysis is replaced by modal energy analysis. Sound transmission through windows and facades is represented by a model that allows any angle on incidence, including the special case of grazing incidence. One chapter is devoted to the subjective evaluation of sound insulation, particularly noise from neighbours, and how this can be applied in a sound classification scheme for dwellings. Measurement methods in building acoustics are presented with emphasis on modern methods using MLS signals or sine sweeps. The analysis and estimation of measurement uncertainty is discussed in detail. In a final chapter examples of experimental buildings with high sound insulation are explained. Table of ContentsReviewsThis book deserves a place on the book shelves of any acoustical consultant, acoustical academic or acoustical researcher who works on sound insulation. -- John Davy, RMIT University, Australia Mr. Rindel is a very renowned person in the field of Building Acoustics, with an extremely rich life time of experience, which allows the readers and users - be them technicians, engineers or practitioners - an overall set of scientific and technical information that certainly will contribute for the development of better professionals and acoustic quality of buildings. -- Jorge Paricio, National Laboratory for Civil Engineering, Portugal The author has an extensive background in the subject of building acoustics and he draws upon his lecture materials, his publications and his experience as a consultant to present subject matter and examples that will be useful to both students and consultants. -- Jeffrey Mahn, National Research Council Canada Statistical energy analysis and flanking calculations were not a part of my acoustics education. I have had to learn these 'on the fly' and I anticipate that this book will be very valuable. -- Wayland Dong, Veneklasen Associates The book has plenty of informative illustrations, and the presentation style and composition are suited for beginners and advanced users. -- Marius Mickaitis, Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, Lithuania This book deserves a place on the book shelves of any acoustical consultant, acoustical academic or acoustical researcher who works on sound insulation. -- Jorge Patricio, National Laboratory for Civil Engineering, Portugal The author has an extensive background in the subject of building acoustics and he draws upon his lecture materials, his publications and his experience as a consultant to present subject matter and examples that will be useful to both students and consultants. -- Jeffrey Mahn, National Research Council Canada Statistical energy analysis and flanking calculations were not a part of my acoustics education. It provides an excellent and challenging treatise on the wide field of building acoustics and gives the reader access to a deep insight and understanding. -- Heinz-Martin Fischer, University of Applied Sciences Stuttgart The author is a great scientist and academician in acoustics. He is very successful in presenting the complicated scientific issues in a more understandable way to take attention of more people. -- Selma Kurra, Consultant to dBKES Engineering Ltd, Turkey The book provides an updated and innovative approach to the study of Sound Insulation in Buildings. -- Maria Machimbarrena, University of Valladolid, Spain. Author InformationJens Holger Rindel is currently senior consultant at Multiconsult in Norway and senior researcher at Odeon A/S in Denmark. Until 2007 he was Professor in acoustics at the Technical University of Denmark. He is also past President of the Nordic Acoustical Association, and past Chairman of the Technical Committee for Building and Room Acoustics of the European Association of Acoustical Societies. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Acoustics and of the Acoustical Society of America. Tab Content 6Author Website:Countries AvailableAll regions |
