Reviews

"Sound is one of a series of amazing question-and-answer books designed for young readers in grades 2-5. The 32-page book, in medium-sized binding, is an excellent resource for students and teachers. Clear illustrations and photographs designed to strengthen comprehension accompany the information. From ""How does sound travel?"" to ""Why can't sound waves travel through outer space?"" questions stimulate further reading. The two-page spread on how the ear works includes a clear illustration of the ear as well as a photograph of the smallest bones in the body, which are in the ear. Students will relate to the photographs in the book showing students learning about sound. High- and low-pitched sounds and how frequency is measured are covered in another section. A diagram depicts how far sound travels in 1 second in air, water, and steel. Each book in this series includes activities, such as the experiment in this book on how sound waves travel through a solid. The section on echoes provides more ideas for experimenting. There are review facts and a glossary. Using this book, students build a circuit with simple materials. Internet sites that have been researched by ""Fact Finders"" staff and further resources in each volume make them a useful resource for classroom centers, independent reading, or group activities.-- ""NSTA Recommends"""
