This songbook is to be used for sung worship during Lent. It is composed in a soulful African American style and is very easy to sing. This music is written in a universal style appropriate for all cultures worldwide. It's simplicity and soul provide for a moving yet restrained lenten worship experience. For use by choirs, cantors, congregations and piano/guitar, this music may be accompanied by a variety of ensembles. The mass is written in a unison style with frequent call and response setting and an extended Penitential Rite to be sung by priest or cantor.

"Dr. Kevin Phillip Johnson, D.M.A Dr. Kevin Johnson, associate professor and chair of music, is a musician, a composer, and an active clinician. The director of the Spelman College Glee Club has traveled through the United States, providing choral workshops, masterclasses, seminars and retreats for music educators and churches. In his professional career as a thriving musician, Dr. Kevin Johnson retired as minister of music at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Atlanta in 2014 and is currently the Director of Liturgy and Worship at the Lyke House Catholic Center of the Atlanta University Center. He is also one of the most highly demanded and prominent musicians in the Archdiocese of Atlanta and Catholic Archdiocese nationwide. Dr. Kevin Johnson is an active and working composer, writing music weekly for Catholic worship with an extensive catalogue including seven mass settings, over 300 psalm settings and many sacred songs. In 2013, he completed his second compact disc recording for Our Lady of Lourdes entitled, "" Reap a Harvest in Due Season: A Treasury of African American Catholic Music"" which includes nine of his own compositions and other favorite songs of the church. During his tenure as a professional composer, Dr. Kevin Johnson has been commissioned to compose several works, including ""A Choice to Change the World"" (commissioned by Spelman College), ""The Mass of Faith"" (commissioned by Father John Adamski), ""The Preacher's Mass"" (commissioned by the Dominican Friars) and his latest work that is still in progress ""The Mass of St. Peter Claver"" (commissioned by the Knights of Peter Claver). On October 18, 2009, Dr. Kevin Johnson, along with the Spelman College Glee Club and Joe Jennings, presented his Jazz Mass setting, The Mass of Faith, in concert at Spelman College. The Mass of Peter Claver was premiered at an anniversary Mass celebrated by the Archbishop of Atlanta, Wilton D. Gregory. Dr. Kevin Johnson has works published by Colla Voce, GIA Publications and Treble Clef Press. He continues to publish most of his music through his very own publishing company, Lion and Lamb Publishing. Among these published works are We Are Christmas, Steal Away, Glory To God, Psalms For The Church Year Volumes I II and III, The Soulful Lenten Mass, Songs of Praise for Worship Choral Series, and The Catholic Choir Workbook for Singers and many others. Dr. Johnson has released the Psalms for the Church Year I, II, III."
