This second revised edition describes the development of Zen Buddhism in Tang-period China and includes the recorded Teachings of Shitou Xiqian, Yaoshan Weiyan and Yunyan Tansheng. It presents the teachings of these three Buddhist masters instrumental in the development of the Caodong School, one of the Five Houses of chan, introduced as Soto Zen to Japan by Master Dogen Zenji in the 13th century. The translations were made during James Mitchell's tenure as visiting professor at the Foreign Affairs Graduate College of the People's Republic of China, Beijing, with the indispensable assistance of Prof. Yulie Lou, Chair of the Philosophy Department at Beijing University, after a careful examination and comparison of the Song-period histories. From his earliest years as a poet and an editor, James Mitchell has demonstrated a great commitment to under- served writers. In the late 1960s, after years of graduate work, Jim rode into San Francisco for the Summer of Love and immediately ran into Bruce Boone, sealing his fate as a key figure in the micro-ecology of gay publishing that was then beginning to emerge. Today, Jim continues to show this commitment through Ithuriel's Spear, which has published dozens of books by local writers, including reissues of Bruce Boone's MY WALK WITH BOB (2006) and Robert Gl�ck's ELEMENTS (2013). Yulie Lou was Chair of the Philosophy Department at Beijing University.
