Then I published my first novel, Dans le jardin de l'ogre (Gallimard), in the summer of 2014, some French journalists were surprised that a Moroccan woman could write such a book. By that they meant free and sexual book , a trash and raw book, which tells the story of a woman suffering from sex addiction. As if, culturally, I should have been more modest, more reserved. As if I should have contented myself with writing an erotic book with orientalist accents, a worthy descendant of Scheherazade. However, it seems to me that the North Africans are very well placed to tackle themes related to sexual pain, frustration or alienation. The fact of living or having grown up in societies where sexual freedom does not exist makes sex an object of permanent obsession.
