OverviewThe Doobie Brothers are an American Rock band that formed in San Jose California in 1970. The band is marked by dual-lead guitars and vocal harmonies with their greatest success coming in the late 1970's. They found an audience among the Northern California biker bars until a demo tape caught the attention of Warner Brother Records. Tom Johnston was the leasd singer from 1970 to 1975, but due to health problems, the band hired Michael McDonald, whose interest in soul music introduced a new sound to the band. They had a love of cannabis cigerettes, or also know as ""doobies."" When asked by reporters how they got the name The Doobie Brothers, the story the band told was it was the name of the bee character ""Mr. Doobie"" on Romper Room who they loved. In 1976, the band was under contract to create a new album, and their new sound was a softer rock with the blue-eyed sould of McDonal's voice which became known as ""Yacht Rock."" The Doobies have 27 hits in the Top 100 including ""Black Water,"" ""Real Love,"" ""Long Train Running,"" ""The Doctor,"" ""Listen to the Music,"" and ""Minute by Minute."" Their 1978 album, Minute by Minute, was on the radio and charts for two years. The Doobie Brothers created 16 studio albums, in 2020 when they celebrated 50 years of playing rock music, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
