OverviewThis thematic volume of Current Topics in Developmental Biology presents current reviews of somitogenesis: the sequential process by which varying layers of the mseoderm develop into bone and muscle, the spinal column, and connective tissue and skin, respectively. Somites are repeating structures within the embryonic paraxial mesoderm that are one of the most easily recognized structures in early embryos and the first overt evidence of vertebrate segmentation. Somites are transitory structures, their constituent cells ultimately give rise to 3 distinct classes of tissues in the vertebrate body: the sclerotome forms the axial skeleton and ribs; the myotome forms all of the skeletal muscle in the body; and the dermotome forms the dermis of the skin over the back.
