Overview

Increasing demand for operating properties of fabricated elements on the one hand and a necessity for reducing weight of a structure on the other have stimulated materials engineering research into improving material strength representing the required functional properties Weight reduction in an improvement requirement seen in automobiles aerospace and electronics industries This is 35 and 78 weight less than aluminium and steel alloys Recently the possibility of making multiple automobile parts from magnesium alloys such as engine block wheels steering columns seats was seen In such applications the relative sliding motion of the components resulted in material loss through friction wear and exhibiting low hightemperature strength and relatively poor corrosion resistance Methods commonly used in the invention of surface modification such as severe plastic deformation high pressure torsion equal channel angular processing; accumulative roll bonding have been known for several years Friction Stir Processing FSP is a new method of recent origin for changing the microstructure of the processed material It was derived from Friction Stir Welding FSW newline. Magnesium and its alloys are the lightweight alternatives to conventional metallic alloys considering their 40% lower weight compared to aluminum alloy and 78% lower than steel. As a result, magnesium alloys find extensive applications in automotive and light trucks. Magnesium alloys have some decisive advantages over aluminium alloys, due to their latent heat as about two- thirds that of aluminium alloys, and with a lower solubility for iron when molten, and with higher fluidity. These provide a shorter cycle time for magnesium alloys and the feature of reactive steels in the diecasting process
