OverviewThe behavior of materials and structures under load is a very important subject for any student of engineering. Of particular concern is the way in which these bodies react to applied forces. Such forces normally result in deflections while stresses and strains are set up in the body. In order to design structures that will resist failure, engineers must be familiar with the fundamental principles and concepts regarding materials and structures. While teaching the subject, the author has observed that though several texts exist that address the principles well with detailed derivations of relevant formulae, hardly any text exists that focuses primarily on problem solving skills. Whereas the students may be comfortable with the material taught in class, they tend to have difficulties when confronted with analytical problems. This book is meant to bridge this gap by providing several worked examples for each topic, followed by exercises with answers. This gives the student an opportunity for plenty of practice, especially after each topic has been covered in class, and just before the examination period. It's a text book to be used as a tutorial book after each topic has been taught.
