Solo

Overview

Outside she is a shy little girl, but inside are magic worlds and rocket submarines. Discover the power of the introvert. It’s fun to be part of a busy, whizzy crowd. Sometimes, when things are noisy, do you long for the space and quiet that lets your imagination flow? Get ready for Solo to take you on an adventure where we discover being alone is not the same as being lonely, and you should not judge an introvert by her cover! We can guess Solo is an introvert through her name, but you can see from her bright yellow coat that she’s also strong and independent. She isn’t lonely: she enjoys being alone. Jesse is a classic extrovert who immediately asks Solo to play, but he also has emotional intelligence, working out quickly that Solo is overwhelmed. When he finds her again, they create a special place where the two are friends who perfectly compliment each other. Clark uses colour and shape to perfectly express the complexity of each character and show us the story instead of just telling.

Reviews

This is an engaging story with underlying guidance on how an introverted child might be supported in uncomfortable situations. The risograph-style illustrations are contemporary and add a lively, graphic feel, making this an enjoyable family read. INIS Magazine

Author Information

Neil’s country childhood fuelled a playful imagination. Following a successful career as a designer, he found his happy place writing and illustrating for children. His books have featured on CBeebies Bedtime Stories and in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. Neil says Solo was inspired by, ""a feeling from my own childhood and now watching my own kids that are two and six. I wanted to tackle the perception of what it is to be an introvert. Negativity around words like ‘shy’ and ‘alone’ can have a big impact. This book is for the strong introverts out there. It celebrates those quiet moments and the value of alone time and having that space for your imagination to go wild."" Location: North Yorkshire, UK.
