Author Information

Dieter E. Pongratz, MD, is Professor of Neurology and Internal Medicine at the University of Munich's Friedrch-Baur-Institute. Dr. Pongratz is an educator, clinical investigator, and physician. His research has focused on clinical aspects and myopathological findings in patients with neuromuscular diseases. He has authored around 300 original papers and edited books on clinical neurology, muscle disease, and differential diagnosis in internal medicine. Dr. Pongratz is a member of several professional societies and is currently President of the International MYOPAIN Society. Siegfried Mense, MD, is Professor of Anatomy and Cell Biology at Heidelberg University. Dr. Mense has studied neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of muscle pain in experiments for more than thirty years. His research interests are in the mechanisms of the transition from acute to chronic muscle pain. His published works include several journals and a book on basic and clinical aspects of muscle pain (with David G. Simons and I. Jon Russell). Dr. Mense has been a member of the council of the German chapter of the IASP for more than ten years and is currently Chairman of the German Pain Foundation. Michael Spaeth, MD, is an internist and rheumatologist. Since 1992, Dr. Spaeth has been a physician and clinical investigator at the University of Munich's Friedrich-Baur-Institute. His research interests have focused on Sjogren's Syndrome, immunogenic myopathies, and fibromyalgia syndrome. His published works include several original articles and book chapters. He has been the main investigator of many clinical trials in fibromyalgia and has cared for patients with all types of muscle pain. In 2003, Dr. Spaeth became the senior physician for the rheumatology at the Friedrich-Baur-Institute.
