Overview

Shivering in fear, the rescued kitten, Sofi, escapes from the mean cats, who hurt her in her first home. Sofi's Tale is about a real cat named Sofi, who has white and gray fur that feels as soft as a baby bunny's, and she even hops like one, too. In her new home, the older, wise, gentle cat, Nico, helps her feel safe. He welcomes and comforts Sofi with his large, green eyes. Nico teaches Sofi how to be a friend and how to love. As Nico is dying, Sofi is forced to say good-bye to her best friend. Broken-hearted Sofi barely nibbles her food, meows, or plays with her favorite fuzzy pink mouse toy. One day, her adoptive mom surprises Sofi with a new companion, a new, older kitten named Henri, who looks like a baby lion cub. As a rescued cat, Henri also has his own past from his first home. He fears loud noises and new people so much that they send him running into and hiding in closets or under beds. Although Sofi tries her best to get along with Henri, most of the time the two cats clash over territory and toys. Sofi meows less and less and hisses more and more at Henri and becomes afraid of him. Henri is confused and feels threatened by Sofi's snooty attitude. The tone in Sofi's Tale shifts to quirky humor as Sofi devises a plan to reclaim her stifled and nearly lost MEOW. Henri reacts by devising his own secret plan to get even. With tenderness and whimsical humor, Barbara E. Wade attempts to interpret each of the cats' thoughts and feelings into their own voices. The cats in Sofi's Tale by Barbara E. Wade will melt the hearts of young children, elementary school age readers, elementary school teachers, and animal lovers. May your meow be heard.

Reviews

As a teacher of 6, 7, and 8 year-old children for more than 38 years, I was always searching for books that talked about feelings my students could relate to. Sofi's Tale is one such book. Susan De Witt, retired teacher, Bethel District, OR Sofi's Taleis a delightful story about a cat and her relationships with the other cats that are part of her family. It is more than just a funny book about cats, but also about the experiences and feelings of the cat through her life and how she reacts to events in her household. A child reading this book will enjoy the cats' antics and also learn about empathy of others through Sofi's eyes. Sofi's Tale Is the perfect book for children to read on their own or for a parent and child to share. Barbara George, Site Coordinator of SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) program
