He was a fellow of the American Sociological Association, and received its Leo Reeder Award for Distinguished Contributions to Medical Sociology in 1985. A member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, he served on the board of the Medical and Health Research Association of New York City and the Bergen County New Jersey Tuberculosis and Health Association.
