OverviewThis is a cross-national study of social security in eight Northern European countries: Germany, France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark. The book discusses and analyzes the situation, problems and trends in social security, providing a discussion of the main trends and challenges with reference to current national social policy debates, placing particular emphasis on the financing and provision of social security in the selected countries. Moreover, some of the principles which have guided the development of various national systems are identified and assessed in terms of their implications for social security provision, for example, personal scope of application, allocation criteria, and benefit formulae for both unemployment and old age pensions.
