Overview

Named after the bar in Hong Kong where most of these poems were first performed, Social Room is Andrew Barker's third collection of Modern Sonnets. Adhering once again to the poetic form of Shakespeare's timeless love poems, these new verses are more autobiographical than those in the previous collections, yet still engage with Barker's core concerns of authority, family, friendship, art and the passing of time. This collection contains the Lockdown Sonnets which were written chronologically during the time of Covid, and deal with the writer's honest and changing reaction to what he is experiencing at that time, and how to address it. Sonnets 204-205, continues Andrew Barker's demonstration of the seeming paradox of the scope and range that can be achieved by focusing on a single poetic form.
