Overview

How do speakers of English as an additional language manage their talk and interaction in chat rooms? Christopher J.Jenks thoroughly analyses the interactional effects of technology, and explores in detail the social and linguistic implications of communicating in second language chat rooms. Providing a unique look at how second language talk is organized in an online setting, this book is essential reading for postgraduate students and scholars in computer-mediated communications, social interactions, TESOL and applied linguistics. It focuses on voice-based chat rooms instead of text-based ones, adding to and enriching the existing body of research on second language textbooks within computer-mediated communication studies.

Reviews

"A thorough study of computer mediated social interaction.--Jose Ignacio Aguilar Ro, Universit de la Sorbonne Nouvelle - Paris III ""Linguist List"" The conversation analytic perspective of this volume provides original insights on online voice interaction. Jenks' skilful analysis demonstrates how speakers of English as an additional language acquire interactional competence during online social interaction. It is a significant contribution to the burgeoning online interaction research agenda.-- ""Vincenza Tudini, Research Centre for Languages and Cultures, University of South Australia"" This book is an invaluable resource for social science students, specifically those interested in the areas of applied linguistics and intercultural communication. Overall it is quite accessible event to those who do not have a good grasp of areas such as conversation analysis and online communication. There is hardly any assumption of prior knowledge as it makes sure all terminology is extensively defined and the literature of the different fields well reviewed and contextualised.--Hanan Ben Nafa, Manchester Metropolitan University ""BAAL News"""
