Reviews

This book represents the first thorough overview of the work of Gibson Winter. It is an accurate, well-researched, and clearly written introduction to the writings of one of the most important social ethicists of our time. (Robert M. Doran, Regis College, Toronto) This important study of the evolution of Gibson Winter's ethics and theology through individualistic, social and communitarian phases will be of interest to specialists and general readers. Professor McIntyre is balanced and fair both in her approving treatment of Winter's break with neo-orthodoxy and in her gentle lament that he does not wholeheartedly embrace the new cosmology. (Roger Hutchinson, Emmanuel College, Toronto) Gibson Winter's analytical and constructive work in both the human sciences and social ethics merits the attention Moni McIntyre has given it in this treatise. By contrasting his earlier and later writings, McIntyre sets forth a good analysis of Winter's search for a comprehensive social theory in which the intrinsic relation of person and community is adequately established. (Peter J. Paris, Princeton Theological Seminary) McIntyre's book is a helpful source for exploring the thoughts of this important twentieth-century Protestant theologian. (Ted Reeve, Toronto Journal of Theology)
