Overview

"Mischka Gallo and her Roma family travel through Poland and Germany. She learned early to ignore the insults of those who call her people ""Gypsies."" Pauline ""Pippi"" Stanek has lived a settled life in a small German border town. In her mid-teens, she meets Mischka through her brother, Emil Stanek, a World War I soldier who went AWOL and was adopted by Mischka's troupe. Mischka and Pippi become fast friends . . . but then WWII begins, ""undesirables"" are sent to labor camps, and the Nazis will not stop until they get every Gypsy, Jew, dissident, and homosexual. On the run and separated from her family, Mischka can hardly comprehend the obstacles that face her. When she is captured, she must use all her wits just to stay alive. Can Mischka survive through the hell of the war in Europe and find her family? In a world beset by war, two women on either side of the conflagration breach the divide--and save one another. Snow Moon Rising is a stunning novel of two women's enduring love and friendship across family, clan, and cultural barriers. It's a story of desperation and honor, hope and fear at a time when the world was split into a million pieces."

Reviews

This is one of the best books about World War II and the way it turned traditional Europe topsy-turvy. Kudos to award-winning author Lori L. Lake who tackles this well-worn subject with great tact, balance, in-depth research and from an unusual point of view. And thanks for weaving such a constant thread of hope into the fabric of the story which might have been otherwise too bleak and disheartening: From the outset we know that - at least - some will overcome because after darkness there is always light . . . This is an incredibly rich book about of life, love, family, war and freedom and a gripping read. Curve Magazine Lori L. Lake is a compelling storyteller, a supple stylist, and a sophisticated student of human nature. When you pick up one of her novels or stories, you can anticipate hours of pleasure and welcome enlightenment. You will meet characters you would really like to know. And you will come away not only eager for more, but impressed with this unique and captivating talent. Ann Bannon, author of the Beebo Brinker Chronicles The vast research Lake must have done to write this novel shows her determination to have it rise above entertainment to become literature. It's a story of the ways people struggle to survive in the face of terror, pain and loss, but more importantly it's a story of love. I highly recommend it. Marjorie Reynolds, author of The Starlite Drive-In and Take Your Novel to the Next Level: Advanced Techniques for the Fiction Writer A wonderful book that talks about the Holocaust of WWII from a different point of view. This story is about the Roma people, and about two women who love each other. So well written, so deeply moving. I love this book. Sandra de Helen, author of novels, plays, and poems, including the poetry collection Desire Returns for a Visit This is a story of family, friendship, tradition and the evil that humans can do to each other. While the reader enjoys a good story, there is also a great history lesson being taught. That's the best way to do it. Snow Moon Rising should be on everyone's must read list. Lynne Pierce, Piercing Reviews Magnificent storytelling! Snow Moon Rising is an epic historical saga with rich, well-rounded characters and a plot that totally captivates. Following the story of two families brought together by war and tied together by love and friendship, it's about two women who find the strength to survive and to love. Verda Foster, author of Graceful Waters, The Gift, and She's the One
