Overview

Trusting God has fallen on hard times in Christian circles. If a person with a serious emotional or relational problem comes to his pastor for counsel and after listening carefully, the pastor tells him that the solution is to trust God, that pastor would be ridiculed as giving worthless, impractical advice. He would be advised to refer such people to trained, licensed psychotherapists who know how to deal with these matters. But the Bible from start to finish shows us people who triumphed over difficult problems by trusting in God. Hebrews 11 gives us snapshots of many Old Testament saints who overcame difficult trials by faith in God. Most of the stories are snapshots of victory, but right in the middle of Hebrews 11:35, the author pivots to those who were tortured, mocked, imprisoned, suffered hardship, and were martyred. They were not lacking in faith, but rather triumphed over these terrible trials by their faith. The Bible gives these snapshots of faith to encourage us to trust God in whatever circumstances we find ourselves.
