Yuri N. Utkin received the M.S. degree in chemistry after graduating Chemical Faculty of the Moscow State University. Then Yu.Utkin joined the Shemyakin-Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry Russian Academy of Sciences, Russia, where he spent his entire career and obtained his Ph.D. and D.Sci. degrees in bioorganic chemistry. He was promoted to Professor in 2006. His current research interests encompass isolation of proteins with new pharmacological properties from animal venoms; elucidation of the general principles of protein recognition for particular cases of the receptor interactions with neurotoxins; characterization of ligand-binding sites in neuroreceptors as a prerequisite for rational drug design. Prof. Utkin is a Member of European Society for Neurochemistry, International Society on Toxinology and American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
