Overview"William ""Smokey"" Robinson Jr., born on February 19th, 1940, Detroit, Michigan, U.S., is a singer, songwriter, record producer, and former record executive. Smokey was the founder and front man of the Motown vocal group the Miracles, for which he was also chief songwriter and producer. Robinson led the group from its formation as the Five Chimes during 1955, until he announced his retirement from the group to focus on his role as Motown's vice president in 1972. Smokey returned as a solo artist the following year then left the company during 1990, after the sale of Motown Records in 1988, having been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the previous year. Robinson was awarded the 2016 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for his lifetime contributions to popular music."
