Overview

The Seattle area had been inhabited by Native Americans for at least 4,000 years before the first permanent non-native settlers, Arthur A. Denny and the Denny Party, who arrived at Alki Point on November 13, 1851. The settlement was subsequently moved to its current site and named ""Seattle"" in 1853, after Chief Si'ahl of the local Duwamish and Suquamish tribes. Logging was its first major industry, but by the late 19th century the city and become a commercial and shipbuilding center. Seattle was also a 'Gateway to Alaska' during the great Klondike Gold Rush. Skipping ahead, Seattle again became the focus of attention with the Seattle World's Fair in 1962, which is when the famous Seattle Space Needle became a part of the Seattle skyline.
