Overview

THE TINGALINGS are a cast of five loveable characters - Braveling, Sparkling, Darling, Smartling and Bumbling -who promote kindness and climate change awareness. Using one character and one adventure at a time, the series gently opens young eyes to climate change’s extensive reach, with easy ideas for ways to reduce our carbon output at home. The series launched in November 2020 with DARLING SAVES A KOALA BEAR, following Darling’s adventure to save koala bears from the wildfires ravaging their home. Next in April 2021 came BRAVELING SAVES A SNOW LEOPARD. Then third up is ‘kind, wise, calm’ Smartling’s ocean adventure, which exposes the impact of waste on ocean habitats. The weighty reality of sea pollution is toned down for young minds by each story’s happy outcome, Jenny Wren’s delightful illustrations, sing-song text and ideas for simple climate solutions that the whole family can adopt. The Tingalings are playing in the park when they are visited by a distressed seagull who has flown from the coast to give an important message - a baby sea turtle is trapped in plastic waste and needs rescuing. The Tingalings jump to action! Fun facts are provided on oceans and sea turtles. A must have for all inquisitive children. A guaranteed minimum of £1.50 from all book sales of THE TINGALINGS is channelled into Mabel’s Fund, which finances extra-curricular activities for children attending schools with high pupil premiums. Their first partner school, Washwood Heath Academy, is seeing the direct benefit of Mabel’s Fund with 210 primary school pupils experiencing an inspiring school trip this term, fully funded. https://youtu.be/MHBJXn0ic3w

Author Information

Mabel Hewitt and Matt Henderson are the co-founders of Mabel's Enterprise and co-authors of The Tingalings. Mabel is 91 years old. No stranger to adversity, she suffered poverty and abuse as a child during World War II. She lost her husband and sole life partner at 56 and successfully battled cancer at 88. With the kindest heart, she is passionate about equal opportunities for all children. Mabel believes the key to tackling the world's most serious issues (e.g. climate change, poverty and social injustice) is to empower and inspire children to make the world a better place.  Mabel has teamed up with Grandson Matt, devoted Dad of three, who has left corporate life behind to invest his time and money in this ambitious project. Mabel and Matt channel all profits from the sale of Tingalings products (currently books and organic clothes) into Mabel's Fund to finance inspiring extra-curricular activities for children attending schools located in areas of high child poverty. They guarantee customers at least £1.50 from all book sales will be channelled to Mabel's Fund, after applying retailer discount. Their first partner school, Washwood Heath Academy, is located in a Birmingham ward with 57% child poverty.
