Smart Choices for Clean Energy: Multi-criteria Decision-Making and Geographical Information Systems in Renewable Energy Sources Planning

Overview

This book demonstrates how Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can revolutionize sustainable energy planning. From evaluating and prioritizing criteria for optimal site selection to harnessing the power of GIS for spatial analysis and visualization, readers of the book learn about decision-making processes that drive renewable energy projects. The book includes theory and practical application, and includes illustrated maps and visualizations generated through GIS. It offers a robust foundation for professionals, researchers, and students.

Author Information

Dr. Ana Fernández-Guillamón received the B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from University de Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM), Albacete, Spain, in 2016. She also received the M.Sc. degree in Renewable Energies and the Ph.D. degree (Hons.) in Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency from the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, Spain, in 2017 and 2021, respectively. She is currently a lecturer enrolled at the Applied Mechanics and Project Engineering Department, UCLM. Furthermore, she is the author of more than 40 scientific contributions, including journals and conferences. Her research interests include renewable energy source integration, power system stability, energy planning, and multi-criteria decision-making.   Dr. Isabel C. Gil-García received the B.Sc. degree in Industrial Organization Engineering from the University of Matanzas, Cuba, in 1991. She received the M.Sc. degree in Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency from European University of Madrid, Spain, in 2017, and the Ph.D. degree in Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency from the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, Spain. Since 2016, she has been a Research Professor with the Faculty of Engineering, Distance University of Madrid, Spain. She is the author of three books and more than 30 scientific papers, including journals and conferences. Her research interests include projects related to the energy transition, renewable energy technologies, and the analysis of cases aligned with sustainable development goals. In addition, she works on solving optimization problems for wind sites, both onshore and offshore.   Dr. Adela Ramos Escudero holds a Ph.D. in Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency from the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), where she also earned her master's degree in the same field and graduated in Mining Engineering. She was an associate professor at UPCT and a researcher at Polytechnic University of Valencia. Currently, she is a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at TU Delft in The Netherlands, conducting research on the application of Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage technologies in Southern European countries. Her research focuses on developing methodologies based on Geographic Information Systems to assess the potential of renewable energies, particularly shallow geothermal energy. Among her notable publications are studies on Spatial analysis of indicators affecting the exploitation of shallow geothermal energy at the European scale and optimizing site selection for offshore wind farms using multi-criteria decision models. Additionally, she has participated in projects promoting the use of photovoltaic energy in agriculture to reduce water and fertilizer consumption.   Dr. Luis Serrano Gómez received the title of Industrial Technical Engineer from University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) in 1999 and Industrial Engineer by UCLM in 2006. He received his Ph.D. in Sciences and Technologies Applied to Industrial Engineering from UCLM in 2021. Since 2006 until 2024, he was an associate lecturer at UCLM, combining teaching activity with professional activity. He is currently a lecturer enrolled at the Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Automation, and Telecommunications Department, UCLM. He is co-author of a chapter of a book and more than 10 scientific articles, between journals and congresses. His research interests include projects related to renewable energies, risk management and decision-making methodologies.
