Overview

Is the hard path a dead end? Dale Ralph Davis plunges right into the middle of King David’s hard times with a study that resounds with relevance for our own lives today. King David’s faith brought him through the muddy parts of life. Will we find that depression is our final response to a hard path? Or will faith carry us beyond?   These Psalms commend a scripture filled life bursting with encouragement.   In this second instalment of his essential guide to the Psalms, trusted theologian Dale Ralph Davis leads readers through a careful study of Psalms 13–24 with clear application for daily life. Using his own translation, Davis sets out a verse–by–verse exposition and crystallises the Psalmist’s message with cross–references to situate the passages in broader biblical context. With illustrations from history and personal experience, the truth comes alive.   An indispensable accompaniment to the Psalms. Suitable for use as a personal study guide or as a reference and teaching guide for facilitating small group study.   Read the rest of the series: The Way of the Righteous in the Muck of Life: Psalms 1–12 In the Presence of my Enemies: Psalms 25–37 My Exceeding Joy: Psalms 38–51

True worship is, as Dale Ralph Davis puts it in this brilliantly helpful book on Psalms 13-24, 'from the top down'. So the same has to be true of our devotional reading of God's word. Our true comfort, our deep encouragement to persevere, our solid growth in trust amidst the mayhem of life all start with God as he has spoken in his word. It's this capacity to draw fresh devotional truths from the deep well of the biblical text that is the author's great gift. Here is a fellow-traveller who is realistic and properly grounded on the same planet that the rest of us occupy, refreshing us along God's way with God's revealed and written truth. So the author's profound understanding of what the text of the Psalms means leads to profound help with what the Psalms really do mean for you. Dale Ralph Davis has these two things the right way round. This book is an absolute gem! Dominic Smart Minister, Gilcomston Church, Aberdeen, Scotland Those of us who have long valued Ralph Davis' ministry of the Word both written and spoken will welcome more of the same in this exposition of Psalms 13-24. His engaging style and his gift for apt (often hilarious) illustration are here again, in full measure, and behind them you are aware of that rare combination, awesome scholarship (the man has read and evaluated everything!) together with a passion for hearing and passing on in a thoroughly down-to-earth style what God is saying to His church today. Michael Wilcock Formerly Director of Pastoral Studies at Trinity College, Bristol & Vicar of St Nicholas, Durham Always fresh, always insightful. Dale Ralph Davis shows you what's there and leaves you wondering why you didn't see it before! Colin S. Smith Senior Pastor, The Orchard Evangelical Free Church, Arlington, Illinois & President of Unlocking the Bible Dale Ralph Davis has provided another faithful, lively and refreshing set of expositions. All Christians will benefit from this book and I hope it is read widely. Sam Allberry Assistant P

His style is unique and his content infectious. A pastor at heart, his insights are always governed by an absolute loyalty to the text, a belief that the Bible was written for today as much as yesterday, and a desire to encourage his readers to fall in love with Scripture and to trust it. These expositions of Psalms 13-24 tantalizingly suggest there may be further volumes given the enormous success of the first set (Ps. 1-12). What a treasure that would be!
