US astronomer Krupp has visited hundreds of ancient sites where our ancestors studied (or worshipped) the heavens. A more solid book than some of his earlier illustrated contributions, this is a fascinating insight into what the author calls 'the archaeology of power'. How far were these observatories the tools of the mortal - kings and priests - in establishing and retaining power on Earth by mirroring the power of the heavens? (Kirkus UK)
