Skin cancers develop from precancerous skin conditions

Overview

Skin cancers are common in Europe, where they account for over 40% of all cancers. In Africa, they rank second among cancers after primary liver cancer in Senegal and account for 11.83% of all diagnosed neoplasms in Togo. In Côte d'Ivoire, skin cancers accounted for 0.6% of patients seen at the dermatology centre of Treichville University Hospital between 1992 and 1995. Skin cancers are extremely varied and exhibit a wide range of clinical presentations. They are predominantly squamous cell carcinomas, basal cell carcinomas and melanomas. Their management requires early and accurate diagnosis. Indeed, cancer surgery can cause significant skin and mucosal damage, whereas early screening, treatment and monitoring of skin conditions likely to develop into cancer can help prevent skin cancers. This requires a good understanding of the conditions that promote the development of these cancers, particularly the skin diseases that predispose to them.
