Reviews

"""Simply, I love this book. We are welcomed into [Diamond's] way of seeing so gracefully. Absolutely lovely and absolutely intelligent. And, best of all, the combination of the written and the visual is intensely moving."" - Anne Michaels, author of Fugitive Pieces ""It is such a relief when a book appears that reminds us why real books are necessary. Sketches is a book that has a weight and texture, inside and out...In Sketches, written words and drawn-and-painted images combine to make a complete three-dimensional picture."" - Perspectives, Apr 11, 2011 ""Sketches gathers [Diamond's] recollections and visual renderings of some of the crucial places in his life - It's a dizzying tour, the highlights of 60 years distilled on the page. The drawings are technically strong but unexceptional as artwork. What's interesting is the way Diamond paints like an architect, his eye reducing buildings and landscapes to solids and voids, planes and volumes."" - International Architecture & Design, Dec 1, 2010"

Author Information

Highly acclaimed, South African-born architect and educator A.J. Diamond immigrated to Canada in 1964, where he became involved in the Toronto's architectural reform movement. In 1975, Diamond established his own firm and was joined, in 1989, by Donald Schmitt. Together, Diamond and Schmitt formed one of the most celebrated architectural partnerships in Toronto. Diamond's career encompasses a wide variety of aspects of planning and architecture. His pioneering work in the city of Toronto includes the use of infill, the recycling of historic buildings and the creation of low-rise alternatives to high-rise development.
