Overview

Every year, the Lord of Chiangmai selects a young man from the villages under his dominion to become the Chosen One, the concubine who will have the privilege of being his only lover. But when the Lord tires of that pleasure, the boy ceases being the Chosen One, and the Lord strikes out from his palace to find another. The former Chosen One is meanwhile led to the shrine of Agka, the God of Death, and ceremoniously beheaded, for having pleased the Favoured Son of the Great God Xiu, it would not be fitting that a lesser man know the same pleasure as his Lord.
