Six Inches

Overview

Six inches. That is the distance between the twin beds in the Richmond Hill house where Ezekiel and Elijah Doodnauth share a room, a face, and a childhood shaped by the things their family does not say. Raised by their grandmother Ajee in the heart of the Guyanese diaspora in Queens, the twins grew up on Liberty Avenue - where the church pews fill every Sunday, where the seen and the unseen coexist without apology, and where grief is buried under work and prayer and food prepared before dawn. Their mother died giving birth to them. Their father never recovered. And Zeke has buried something of his own: a devotion to his identical twin that has become, somewhere in the passage from boyhood to seventeen, the one thing he cannot pray away, think away, or survive. As the twins move from adolescence into young adulthood, the distance between them shifts and contracts - six inches to eight feet, the same room to different boroughs, estrangement to a closeness that threatens to undo them both - and Zeke discovers that no wall he builds, no confession he makes, no substitute he finds, can protect him from the thing he carries. Set within the richly rendered world of Indo-Guyanese Queens - its food, its folklore, its faith, its silences - Six Inches is a novel in the tradition of Dostoevsky: an uncompromising, psychologically immersive portrait of a mind at war with its own body. It does not offer comfort. It asks only whether the capacity for monstrous love is what makes us monsters, or what makes us human.
