Overview

Ted Bundy referred to his first bolt for freedom as The Great Escape. Recognizing that books, documentaries, and films concerning Bundy had completely glossed over this manhunt, Ric Conrad set out to discover what happened during that legendary week in Aspen. With the understanding that authors have generally focused on the fugitive himself, Conrad's desire was to tell this story from the perspective of law enforcement. He tracked down, interviewed, or corresponded with thirty-six individuals who had participated in the manhunt or had crucial details concerning the event. He puts the reader in the field: on horseback as a member of the sheriff's posse, behind the wheel of a police car as the streets of Aspen are searched, on foot in the mountains surrounding town, and in the chairs in dispatch-making the tough decisions. Representatives from the Pitkin County Sheriff's Department, Aspen Police Department, Aspen-Pitkin County Communications Center, Colorado State Highway Patrol, and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation have all shared their memories in this gripping yet campy volume. The community's strange mix of disbelief and humor in Aspen was palpable as law enforcement members headed into the hills, in search of America's most notorious serial killer.

Reviews

""Ted Bundy's first escape was a blow to the entire department. As one of the deputies charged with the custody of the serial killer, I appreciate how Conrad genuinely captured our minute-by-minute thoughts and concerns as we struggled throughout the manhunt."" -Gary White, Pitkin County Deputy Sheriff, 1977 ""We may have been young and undertrained, but we were also fairly intelligent and inventive when it came to conducting the largest manhunt Aspen had ever seen. Conrad elicited visceral reactions during his interviews with those of us who were on the ground and in the air during that fateful week. He accurately captures the planned measures, as well as the chaos that followed those two memorable words-Bundy escaped!"" -Nancy Baxter, Supervisor, Aspen-Pitkin County Dispatch, 1977 ""The manhunt was a nightmare for anyone carrying a badge and a gun. Six Days in Aspen accurately depicts what it was like to be part of the multi-agency team of officers that began combing the mountains surrounding Aspen, searching for a serial killer."" -Jim Loyd, Colorado State Trooper, 1977 ""As the author's research reveals, we took our lumps, lost a lot of sleep, and stress became an all too familiar companion. Being a rookie, with only seven weeks on the job, the manhunt was a rush beyond my wildest dreams. There's plenty of new material concerning Ted Bundy in Six Days in Aspen, but the book is primarily a wonderful tribute to the law enforcement community in the Roaring Fork Valley."" -Chet Zajac, Patrol Officer, Aspen Police Department, 1977
