Author Information

Richard B. Gasaway, PhD, has served more than 30 years as a public safety professional in six emergency service organisations. Before retiring in 2009, he held the positions of firefighter, EMT-paramedic, lieutenant, captain, training officer, assistant chief and fire chief. In addition to his lifelong commitment of service to others, Dr. Gasaway has a second passion: understanding how the brain works and relaying those lessons in meaningful ways for the benefit of first responders. He is widely considered to be one of the nation’s foremost authorities on first responder decision making and situational awareness under stress. His programmes on situational awareness and decision making have been presented more than 2,500 times to some 30,000 first responders and business professionals worldwide. He has contributed to more than 350 journal and website articles, books, and book chapters on the topics of first responder leadership and safety.
