Sirens in the Waves

Overview

Sirens in the Waves is a collection of poems ten lines or fewer-brief, incisive, and often quietly provocative. In the spirit of D. H. Lawrence's Pansies, these compact works distill desire, nature, humor, and human contradiction into striking moments of clarity.

Author Information

Hugh Stevens is an American poet and visual artist born in 1949. He divides his time between Chicago, Philadelphia, and southwest Michigan, gravitating toward warmer climates in winter. A graduate of Northwestern University, Northwestern University School of Law, and the University of Chicago, Stevens served for more than twenty years as an assistant public defender. His poetry reflects a lifetime of close observation-pairing restraint, wit, and candor in lines that are spare yet emotionally resonant.
