Overview""WHEN THE SIREN QUEENS CAME TO POWER OVER THE OTHER FAE, IT WASN'T THAT THEY HAD BECOME CIVILIZED. IT WAS JUST THAT THE WOLVES HAD LEARNED TO LIVE WITH THE SHEЕР."" Born into a line of siren queens bound forever to Ardaion's ancient wellspring of power as its defenders, Serena is rejected at birth by her mother, the ruthless Queen Mab. Raised instead by her grandfather, a legendary general, Serena grows into a powerful warrior and mage, trained to command armies and courts alike. As she comes of age, the siren in her awakens, but with no mother to guide her, she fears what she is becoming. When invaders from a dying realm threaten Ardaion, Serena steps onto the battlefield, unleashing her lethal siren abilities to defend her homeland. But victory demands sacrifice, and devastating loss transforms her into something fiercer, more determined, more dangerous. Bound by blood, magic, and duty, Serena must become the leader she was born to be, even if it means confronting the shadows of her birthright, the ambitions of those who betrayed her, and the brutal legacy of the queens who came before. This book is everything I want from high fantasy: ruthless courts, razor-sharp politics, ancient magic, and heroines who are allowed to be both dangerous and deeply vulnerable. The world of Ardaion is beautifully realized, immersive worldbuilding. IMHO Melysin writes similarly to Sanderson. Lush, dangerous, and so alive you can almost taste the salt in the air. The lore about the Siren Queens and the Binding hooked me from page one, and I loved how the history of the realm actually matters to the present-day stakes. Serena is a coming-of-age protagonist with many growing pains. She's not the chosen one because of prophecy (thank god), but because she's born of power and burdened with impossible expectations. Her relationships with her grandfather the war hero, her cold mother, and her friends-turned-potential-loves are full of nuance and actual consequences. And Mab is one of the most calculating, intelligently written queens I've ever read. There's real bite to the plot: betrayal, war, brutal choices. The battle scenes are tense and vivid. And the magic system is unique, tied directly to the wellspring and the bloodlines of the siren queens. There's no vague handwaving, just raw, elemental power that feels like it costs something. If you love epic fantasy that's immersive, emotional, and unafraid to put its characters through the wringer, pick up Siren. I can't wait for the next book. This series has instantly become a favorite. Author InformationIsla Melysin is a Registered Nurse and holds a Doctorate of Nursing Education.
