Sink or Burn

Overview

A Punk Rock Love Story of Resistance, Revolution, and Resilience in a Dystopian Future In Sink Or Burn, the year is 2121, and fascism has overthrown a once-thriving utopia. Amid the ashes of a fallen nation, Cheap Glitter—a queer, punk rock band—becomes the voice of resistance. As they tour across a fractured America, raising funds for the fight against a brutal regime, they navigate wildfires, sunken landscapes, and the terrifying laws of a collapsing society. At the heart of their journey is CT, a lovelorn survivor whose romantic entanglement with a fellow bandmate—a survivor of a different war—complicates their quest for both personal healing and social revolution. As the band balances the weight of trauma with the urgency of their fight, they discover that love, however chaotic, may be their greatest weapon. A punk rock anthem and a manifesto for the broken-hearted, Sink Or Burn tells the story of a tortured artist’s evolution into a divine healer. Cristy Road Carrera, a punk rock icon and Latinx artist, weaves together individual survival with the broader struggle for liberation.

Reviews

Cristy C. Road is the Jack Kerouac of [her] queer generation. She's as brilliant a writer as she is an illustrator. -- Kate Bornstein, author of A Queer and Pleasant Danger When it seems the world is has fallen apart, Cristy Road Carrera does it again, reminding us of our love, power, and resilience one book at a time/ -- Ever Velásquez, director Charlie James Gallery, artist, Santera Curandera Road's writing has long brought to vivid life the experiences of a queer-identified Latina punk rocker. -- Bitch magazine Cristy’s work is a force. I’ve collaborated with her on a couple projects. Whether it’s political or romance, she always comes from a place in the heart. -- Billie Joe Armstrong, Green Day Carrera’s near future New America in Sink or Burn is NOW—where queer, poc, punk bands zigzag our hellscape spitting truths so many of us want—need—to survive. -- Michelle Cruz Gonzales, author of Spitboy Rule, musician (Spitboy, Kamala & The Karnivores) In Sink or Burn, Cristy Road Carrera creates a punk, dystopic opera of a novel, full of her signature obsessions - radical resistance, wild romance, kinship and art. Sprawling, beautiful and inspiring. -- Michelle Tea, author of Valencia, Knocking Myself Up; 2021 Guggenheim Fellow Every punk rocker has wrestled with the question, “Am I selling out, or sneaking in?” In Sink Or Burn, Cristy Road Carrera deftly moves us past that binary toward stakes more suited to our current dystopia. Dragging their dreams across a spectacularly ruined America, the band Cheap Glitter and CT, our narrator, face a deftly recast Prisoner’s Dilemma as Carrera urges us to ask 'If all we have is each other, what will we do with this gift?' Suddenly the crossroad is the destination. -- Mikki Halpin, author of Why Is She Anywhere?, organizer Sink Or Burn, Cristy Road Carrera’s forthcoming genre bending novel, should be read out loud. Carrera’s literary vision combines the political power of Sister Spit, the artistry of underground punk comics, and crunchy epic narratives of the Great American road trip novel. -- New Noise Magazine

Author Information

Eternal rabble rouser Cristy Road Carrera is a first generation Cuban-American artist, writer and musician. Blending anti-fascist principles with survival love stories—Road has spent over twenty-five years testifying to the beauty of the imperfect. Her career began in 1996 with a self-published punk rock fanzine, sparking decades of illustrations for music, literature and social movements. Forging an imprint in queer, feminist counter cultures with graphic memoirs, illustrated novels, and punk rock records; Carrera redefined her career in 2019 with the release of the Next World Tarot, a tarot card deck that envisions a world based on radical re-definitions of self-love and social justice. Carrera has been fronting punk rock bands since her days of self-publishing fanzines. She currently performs her songs as Choked Up, making records and playing shows with the ancient punk rock ethos of passion before profit. Engaging with her world anywhere from Yale University to Bluestockings Bookstore, Carrera continues to thrive on the fringe of the mainstream, and the epicenter of revolution. She is a gemini and works and lives in NYC and Miami.
