As a lover of nature and history, Veselenak often combines the subjects in his writing. Veselenak is a K-12 substitute teacher and has been a house painter for over three decades. He holds a master's degree in political science and taught American government and history at Alpena (Mich.) Community College for 25 years. The author has written several historical articles that have been published in various periodicals. He previously published Swamp Rattler: Facts, History and Status of Michigan's Sole Venomous Serpent. Illustrator Luann Kuznicki lives outside Midland, Michigan. Her love of nature, gardening, and art started at an early age. Her parents even enrolled her as a young teen in college-level courses via mail at the Minnesota Art Institute. Although she studied art in high school and college, she chose science as her career path and became a high school teacher. However the artist within was creatively utilized in her chemistry, biology, anatomy, and physiology instruction. After retiring in 2020 after 30 years of teaching, Kuznicki was able to fully express her artsy side.
