He has directed young musicians at the middle and high school levels, at the college and university levels and in several churches representing numerous denominations. In 2005 he made his Carnegie Hall conducting debut in a critically acclaimed performance of Gabriel Fauré's Requiem, which he conducted without a score. From 2004 to 2006 he served as a vice-president on the Board of Directors for the Texas Choral Directors Association. In 2010, he was one of five music faculty members who earned a Grammy Signature Award awarded to six schools in the United States for excellence in music education. In 2011, Governor Perry appointed Dr. Sanders to serve on the Texas Commission on the Arts, which authorizes and distributes state funding to arts agencies and schools all across Texas. As a composer, Sanders has been commissioned by several universities and high schools across Texas. His latest commission, Like the Seed was commissioned, performed and recorded by the Texas State University Alumni Chorale. Dr. Sanders authored the biographical entry on British composer Tarik O'Regan, which is published in the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. Commissioner Sanders holds a bachelor degree from Charter Oak State University, a Master's degree in conducting from the University of Houston, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Boston University with an emphasis on music education. The title of his doctoral dissertation is The Teaching of Choral Music Sight Singing: Analyzing and Understanding Experienced Choral Directors' Perceptions and Beliefs.
