OverviewAvro Books, an imprint of Quick Red Fox Press, is pleased to announce the forthcoming re-publication of Shutting Down the National Dream: A. V. Roe and the Tragedy of the Avro Arrow by National Business Book Award-winner Greig Stewart, the sourcebook for the $8-million CBC docudrama The Arrow, starring Dan Aykroyd as A. V. Roe CEO, Crawford Gordon. It could be called a love story, a love story between men and engines and aircraft. It becomes noticeable first in the quiet way they remember, and then in the way their eyes occasionally mist up when they recall a special moment, as if haunted by a past they didn't have a chance to finish. Tragedy is clearly the difference between what is and what might have been, and it's the might have beens that seem to hurt so much and touch with such profound sadness virtually every person who was there. Not only is it painful for them to recall what was obviously the time of their lives, it is even more painful living with the unfulfillable desire to get another crack at it, and this time to get it right. A chance, regrettably, lost to time. From Shutting Down the National Dream: A. V. Roe and the Tragedy of the Avro Arrow. Greig Stewart uses a first-rate mix of writing style and extremely thorough reserach to tell a story painfully close to the Canadian heart, and makes it read like a novel. Peter Ward, Ottawa Citizen Author InformationGreig Stewart grew up in the part of Toronto hardest hit by the layoffs resulting from the termination of the Arrow program, the Mount Dennis/Weston area. As a child, he saw the Arrow on many of its test flights. He vividly recalls his father, a union member at Canadian Kodak, going door to door in the late winter of 1959, after the layoffs, collecting for the Avro guys, many of whom were about to lose their homes. Mr. Stewart has been interviewed by national radio and television on the subject of A. V. Roe Canada's airplanes and engines, and has contributed to numerous books and documentaries about the Avro Arrow. Tab Content 6Author Website:Countries AvailableAll regions |
