Table of ContentsReviews'They're wickedly funny, frequently guffaw-inducing stories which whet the appetite for more of the same.' (Alastair Mabbott, Sunday Herald) 'Scathingly funny essays. Black is gifted with a flair for comic apercus... By compartmentalizing his universe into such sharp particulars, he concurrently expands ours, while firmly exceeding any recognized bounds of good taste.' (Alice Hiller, The Times Literary Supplement) 'Black humour from a genuine eccentric... A very funny book.' (Stanley Price, The Jewish Chronicle) 'Arch, waspish, peevish and resigned, his sentences are a delight... When he does drop a bomb - there's one line in the chapter on funerals which was so shocking and moving I had to read it three times - it's all the more powerful for the rare allusion to genuine tragedy.' (Boris Starling, Mail on Sunday) 'The British David Sedaris, with a real flair for the macabre. It's brilliant... He has certainly got a novelist's touch in looking for the comic detail, but the world is far stranger than you can ever create in fiction, and reading this book opens you up to the joy of that.' (Mark Mason, The Monocle Arts Review) 'Black's autobiographical stories take us on a journey into the darkest recesses of British black humour. With a forensic eye for detail, he is a great chronicler of the absurd, bewitching the reader with witty prose and astute observations... A literary gem that will appeal to those who are tickled by the genuine absurdity of life.' (Elizabeth Fitzherbert, The Lady) 'Shrunk is hilarious and unsettling by turns. Black humour now has a new meaning.' (Giles Fraser, The Guardian) 'Oliver Black's tales of a turbulent life are frank, fearless and extremely funny. Our readers have loved them.' (Niall Boyce, Editor, The Lancet Psychiatry) 'If you can already imagine a cross between Mr Pooter, Alan Bennett and Diogenes, then fair enough. If not, you need this darkly hilarious book.' (Anthony Gottlieb, author of The Dream of Reason) Author InformationOliver Black is a professor of philosophy and law, and until recently was also a City lawyer.
